What the theme detector reads

Every Shopify store prints a small block of theme data in its page code: the theme name, its version and its Theme Store ID. The detector reads that block and matches the ID to the Shopify Theme Store for the developer, the price and the listing.

A copied or edited Theme Store theme keeps its name but loses the ID, so it shows as a copy, for example Copy of Dawn. The name the merchant gave the theme in the admin is shown small, since it is often a working label.

Headless stores run their own storefront on Shopify, so they have no theme to report, and a password page still shows the theme. For the full app list use the Shopify App Detector, and to read what buyers say use the Shopify Review Analyzer.

03FAQ

Shopify theme detector FAQ

How do I find out what Shopify theme a store uses?

Paste the store's URL into the Shopify Theme Detector. It reads the theme data Shopify prints on every storefront page and shows the theme name, version, developer, price and a link to the Theme Store listing.

Is the Shopify Theme Detector free?

Yes. You can run 10 lookups a week without an account, and a free account lets you run more.

Do I need store access or an extension?

No. The tool reads the same public page a shopper sees. There is nothing to install and no login to the store.

Why does it say Copy of Dawn or Custom theme?

When a merchant duplicates or edits a Theme Store theme, Shopify keeps the theme name but drops its Theme Store ID, so the tool shows it as a copy. A theme with a name that is not in the Theme Store is custom or was bought elsewhere.

Why is there no theme for some Shopify stores?

Headless stores use Shopify for products and checkout but build the storefront with their own code, such as Hydrogen, so there is no theme to read. A few stores also remove the theme data from their pages.

Does it show the theme price?

For themes in the Shopify Theme Store, yes. The price comes from the Theme Store listing in US dollars, and free themes show as Free. Themes sold outside the Theme Store show without a price.
