02Field guide

Instagram engagement rate: formula, benchmarks and how to read them

The formula is engagements (likes + comments + saves + shares) divided by followers, times 100. That is the number everyone quotes because followers are public, so you can compute it for any account before you talk to them. Reach is the truer denominator, since most followers never see a given post, but it needs the account's insights.

In 2025, carousels averaged 0.55%, reels 0.52% and images 0.37% by followers across 35 million posts from 447,613 pages tracked by Socialinsider. The Q2 2026 read is 0.50%, 0.48% and 0.33%, with 0.45% for all posts. The Quid 2026 benchmark report puts the all-industry brand median at 0.30%. These are mostly brand accounts.

Creators run higher, which is why you should not compare a creator with a brand median. Small and personal accounts have audiences that actually see and answer posts. A 5,000-follower creator at 4% is normal, and a retailer at 0.4% is normal. Use the rule-of-thumb vetting bands for creators and the format averages for brand accounts.

To vet a creator, average 5 to 10 recent posts, ignore the viral outlier, weight comments and saves over likes because they are harder to buy, and read every comment on the post. Specific product questions signal buyers, while emoji walls signal pods.

03FAQ

Instagram engagement rate calculator FAQ

How do you calculate Instagram engagement rate?

Add the likes, comments, saves and shares on a post, divide by the account's followers, and multiply by 100. A post with 620 likes, 48 comments, 90 saves and 25 shares on an 18,000-follower account has 783 engagements, so the rate is 4.35%. To measure a post against the people who actually saw it, divide by reach instead of followers.

What is a good Instagram engagement rate in 2026?

It depends on who you are comparing with. Brand accounts averaged 0.37% to 0.55% by followers in 2025 depending on the format, and the all-industry brand median is 0.30%. For creators, the usual vetting bands are under 1% low, 1% to 3% average, 3% to 6% good and 6% and up excellent, with small accounts running higher.

Should I divide by followers or by reach?

Both, when you can. By followers is the public number and the one every benchmark uses. By reach shows how the post performed with the people who saw it, which matters when the algorithm shows a post to far fewer or far more people than follow the account. It needs the account's own insights, so ask a creator for a screenshot.

Do saves and shares count as engagement?

Yes. Instagram's own insights count likes, comments, saves and shares as interactions, and saves are the strongest signal that a post was useful. Some older calculators count only likes and comments, which understates the rate for carousels and reels.

Why is my rate lower than the benchmark?

Check the format first: images average 0.37% while carousels average 0.55%. Then check the denominator: a large, old follower base drags the rate down because inactive followers still count. Averaging across 5 to 10 recent posts smooths out one weak post.

How do I check a creator's engagement rate before a deal?

Take their follower count and the likes, comments and saves on five to ten recent posts, run each through the calculator, and average the rates. Then read the comments on two or three of those posts: real questions about products point to an audience that buys, while strings of emoji and one-word replies point to pods or purchased engagement.
