--- title: "How to Find Customer Pain Points and Product Ideas on Reddit" description: "Four ways to find the problems people complain about on Reddit, from free search tricks to AI tools, with a real run on freelance invoicing apps and the product ideas it points to." canonical: https://tryadlicio.com/blog/find-customer-pain-points-on-reddit --- # How to Find Customer Pain Points and Product Ideas on Reddit Published 2026-10-21. https://tryadlicio.com/blog/find-customer-pain-points-on-reddit **Short answer:** search Reddit for the moments people complain, switch or give up ("alternative to", "switched from", "I wish"), read the comments under those posts, and count which complaint comes back in different threads. You can do it by hand for free, ask Reddit's own AI search for a summary, or let a tool do the reading: PainOnSocial and IdeaFast rank pain points from the subreddits you pick, and Adlicio does it inside ChatGPT, Claude or Codex, across Reddit and its other 30+ sources. Reddit is the biggest public archive of people describing their problems in their own words, often with the price they paid and the tool that let them down. GummySearch was the usual tool for reading it until it closed to new users in November 2025, and it shuts down for good on December 1, 2026 (see the [GummySearch alternatives](/gummysearch-alternatives)). **How we checked:** we ran method 3 on a real topic, freelance invoicing apps, on October 21, 2026, and show what came back below. The quotes are from public Reddit comments, with usernames left out. Tool prices were read on each tool's own site. ## What counts as a pain point A complaint is not a pain point yet. Look for these signs before you build anything: - **It repeats.** Different people bring it up in different threads. - **It costs something.** Money, hours, a lost client or a lost weekend. - **People already work around it.** A spreadsheet, two apps glued together, a family member who does it for them. A complaint that shows all three is worth a closer look. One loud comment is a lead, not proof. ## Method 1: search Reddit by hand (free) Reddit search works best with the phrases people use when something has gone wrong: | Search for | What it finds | | --- | --- | | "alternative to [product]" | People ready to switch, and their reason | | "switched from [product]" | The breaking point, told afterwards | | "is there a tool that" or "I wish" plus your category | Needs no product meets yet | | "[product] price increase" or "[product] worth it" | Money pain and doubts before buying | | "frustrated with" plus a task | The task itself, before any product is named | Open the threads with the most comments and read the replies, not only the post. The replies are where the same complaint shows up again in someone else's words. Keep a tally: each complaint, how many times you saw it, and one link. This costs nothing and takes one to three hours per topic. ## Method 2: ask Reddit's AI search (free) Reddit has its own AI search that answers a question with a summary of threads. It is a fast first look at a topic. It gives you a summary rather than a counted list of complaints with links to each comment, so use it to choose where to dig, then read the threads yourself. Our [Reddit research tools comparison](/blog/best-reddit-research-tools) covers its limits. ## Method 3: let ChatGPT or Claude read the threads ChatGPT and Claude are good at grouping complaints, but on their own they see only the few pages a web search returns. A Reddit connector lets them search Reddit, pull whole threads with every comment, and count across them. With the [Adlicio connector](/docs/connect/chatgpt) added, you ask in plain words: ```text Use Adlicio to research "freelance invoicing app" on Reddit, in r/freelance, r/smallbusiness and r/Entrepreneur. List the complaints that come up more than once, with a quote and a link for each. Then suggest product ideas that fix the top two. ``` ### A real run: freelance invoicing apps On October 21, 2026 this pulled 6 threads and 59 comments, and returned the 27 comments with a score of 2 or more. It cost 1 credit. Most of the energy sat in one r/smallbusiness thread where long-time users of the Invoice Simple app described a price change. | Pain | What people wrote | Source | | --- | --- | --- | | A price change on a tool they relied on | "I've been with them for 10 years, unlimited invoices. Now I have to pay an additional $199.99 if I want unlimited." | [comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/smallbusiness/comments/1n0bwmf/comment/nc9a4xo/) | | Switching means typing everything again | "Now I have to re-enter all products and prices with a different invoice maker." | [same comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/smallbusiness/comments/1n0bwmf/comment/nc9a4xo/) | | Prepaid and stuck | "I paid for a year in advance. The worst part is that I've been with them for 8 years." | [comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/smallbusiness/comments/1n0bwmf/comment/napkmsz/) | | No app fits at volume | "My business sends between 25-35 invoices a week and I couldn't crack this in my early research. I just couldn't find one that looked how I wanted it." | [comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/smallbusiness/comments/1n0bwmf/comment/napu43q/) | | A low-tech workaround | "I just text my daughter the details....she sends me back nice email with everything formatted neatly." | [comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/smallbusiness/comments/1n0bwmf/comment/naph30q/) | | Invoices live apart from the books | "these are web apps just for sending invoices? How does that then tie in to whatever you use for accounting" | [comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/smallbusiness/comments/1n0bwmf/comment/naq5ce8/) | The same threads also name the apps people moved to: Wave, Zoho Books, Square, FreshBooks, Harvest and Billdu. That is your competitor list, written by the buyers. ### The product ideas it points to - **An invoicing app that imports from the one you are leaving.** Clients, products and prices in one step, pitched at people who just got a price change. Two separate users describe the lock-in, so this is the strongest lead. - **Invoices from a text message.** Send the job details the way you would text a family member and get a formatted invoice back. One comment only, so test it before you build. - **Templates for high-volume trades.** Someone sending 30 invoices a week could not find one that looked right. Six threads is a small sample. Before building, run two or three more searches ("Invoice Simple alternative", "invoice app for contractors") and check that the top complaint still comes back. Then read the App Store and G2 reviews of the apps people switched to, which shows what those apps get wrong too. ## Method 4: use a pain point tool If you would rather not run searches yourself, these tools do the reading. Prices were checked on each tool's own site on October 21, 2026. | Tool | What it does | Sources | Price | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | [Adlicio](/) | Searches and scrapes Reddit threads, ranks the complaints with quotes and links, inside ChatGPT, Claude or Codex | 30+ sources, including Reddit, Amazon, the App Store, G2, YouTube and TikTok | Free account with 3 Reddit runs, paid plans from $49/mo | | [PainOnSocial](https://painonsocial.com) | Groups discussions in the subreddits you pick into ranked pain points | Reddit only | From $19/mo, 7-day trial | | [IdeaFast](https://www.ideafast.pro) | Groups posts about the same problem in the subreddits you pick, scores each from 0 to 100, links the threads | Reddit only | 1 free scan, then $19 for 40 scans or $49 for 100, paid once | | [F5Bot](https://f5bot.com) | Emails you when a keyword appears, with no analysis | Reddit, Hacker News, Lobsters | Free plan with 5 keywords, paid from $9.99/mo | | Reddit's AI search | Summarizes threads for a question | Reddit only | Free | Which one fits: - **Checking one idea and spending nothing:** method 1 by hand. - **Reddit pain points only, without an AI assistant:** PainOnSocial for a monthly plan, IdeaFast to pay once. - **You already work in ChatGPT or Claude, or you want reviews of existing products next to the Reddit threads:** Adlicio. - **You want to hear when your topic comes up again:** F5Bot. ## FAQ **How many threads do I need?** Start with 5 to 10 threads per search and two or three searches. Stop when new threads only repeat what you already have. **Can ChatGPT find pain points on Reddit by itself?** It can summarize a thread you paste in. To search Reddit, read many threads and count the complaints with a link for each, connect a tool first. The [ChatGPT setup guide](/docs/connect/chatgpt) takes a few minutes. **Is Reddit enough on its own?** Reddit shows the problem in people's words. Reviews of the products they use today (App Store, Google Play, G2, Amazon, Trustpilot) show where the current fixes fail. Use both before you decide. **What replaced GummySearch for this?** No single tool copies it. See the [GummySearch alternatives](/gummysearch-alternatives), compared by job and price.
